Family garden giving fun and enjoyment
A family garden was required to provide a fun and safe environment place for all ages. Secondly, the family wanted a garden that nurtured and provided for their love of growing fruit and veg. The existing garden had an uneven random lay paving and aggregate patio adjoining the house and an unsafe set of steps leading down to the lower portion of the garden a metre below. The client hoped to salvage and restore some of the existing materials where necessary. With dramatic changes in level the garden design had to look at how the transition in changes of level could be navigated, in order to make the garden more practical and safe.
Two generous decks of re-used scaffold boards were installed to create two spacious areas in which to relax, cook and dine. The first deck adjoins the house and here a built-in bench seat recycles the existing sleepers creating the top of the bench. A built-in barbecue sits back from the decking in an area of planting and pebbles. The second deck also has built-in L-shaped bench. Also constructed from used scaffold boards, the bench provides plenty of storage, each seat top on hinges. Fun for the children is introduced through a spiral slide that provides a fun route to the lower garden. A soft landing area of bark and planting is located at the bottom of the slide. Here the children can slide and brush past textured and scented planting. The small area of bark also prevents the lawn from becoming scuffed and ultimately wearing thin. Generous steps provide an alternative route for the adults. The steps were carefully constructed around the existing tree. Built-in raised beds in the lower section of the garden allow the family to grow their own the height of the planters allows them to do it with ease.
