Garden Design: A garden of textural planting and summerhouse in Saltford
A garden design for a keen gardener. Some hard landscaping had been previously completed, however the space wasn’t achieving its full potential. The garden now features a number of nooks as well as larger areas in which to relax. A spacious area was created at the bottom of the garden capturing the sun where you can recline in stylish black Adirondack seats. A bench alongside the lawn from which to sit amongst the plants and view the garden, as well as a summerhouse. This creates an outdoor room to further extend the use of the garden. The summerhouse by Crane Garden Buildings was selected by the client and colour chosen to lighten the space.
Views from within the house were crucial. Bifold doors frame the garden through all the seasons and with an open interior layout the garden is visible most of the time. We introduced raised beds to add height to planting and ran evergreens through the garden to give year round structure.
The planting also features a semi-mature yew hedge to give permanence to planting, this wraps the lower seating area. A number of the client’s existing shrubs and perennials were in good condition and offered maturity to the planting. These were retained and we introduced flowering perennials and grasses to give texture and movement. Amongst the plants retained were a Liquidambar tree for fantastic Autumn foliage as well as a Amelanchier lamarckii that produces spring blossom and Autumn colour.
Bespoke timber and steel tension wire screens feature across the garden. The screens disguise unwanted views while also providing support for evergreen climbing plan. A low retaining wall of polished concrete creates a stylish step down into the lower part of the garden.
