Birch in oversized planter in walled garden

LARGE garden IN peaceful semi-rural setting

The features in this large garden close to Bristol celebrate the client’s love of family and friends. We incorporated various seating areas to dine, read or gather round a fire pit. Enjoyment of the garden is extended with the installation of a Swedish wood burning hot tub The cedar clad hot tub nestles beneath an oak pergola for an intimate setting in which to soak. Practical needs are addressed with built-in log stores, storage and bench alongside.

The main terrace was elevated and made more practical by retaining the existing porcelain tiles and increasing depth by installing contrasting clay pavers alongside. This creates a more generous social space and being a sloping garden commands excellent views out the Severn Estuary. A courtyard area features structural pleached hornbeam screening paired with wooden cladding to give a fresh backdrop to the area when used for table tennis. Outdoor lighting is positioned carefully throughout the garden uplighting focal points such as trees, or downlighting for the pergolas.

The expansive garden is connected through generous wide steps that slice through drystone walls echoed on both sides of the garden. A gravel path leads directly to the garden office. The office is wrapped by a bed of ornamental grasses and anchored by a flowering cherry tree. From the office the gaze falls on a smaller seating area. Here family and friends can gather to relax around a fire pit.

In response to our client’s requested for a number of places to relax and entertain. A stylish hanging seat is suspended from the oak pergola at the end of the garden. Drystone walls that encompass the space off others an informal perch. Alongside the pergola we hid a sunken trampoline behind yew hedging. Evergreen yew hedging also blurs the boundaries and hides existing fencing.

The garden is on the outskirts of Bristol, a semi-rural spot where any edibles would be a tempting treat for wildlife. We built two raised oak beds with hinged screens to protect any crops. Planting is in the form of contemporary, bold blocks of perennials that create seasonal impact while being lower maintenance than a traditional herbaceous border style planting.
