contemporary garden basalt paving and slatted fencing

A contemporary space for all the family

The design for a family garden in Henleaze, Bristol seeks to create an attractive garden that can be enjoyed when viewed from different aspects. The garden has many functions including workspace, outdoor kitchen and play zone for the family’s two children. Existing elements include the garden office, outdoor kitchen area and artificial lawn. The design unifies the garden and creates a greener space.

Basalt paving and new artificial lawn are the two surfacing materials. The new basalt terrace integrates with the artificial lawn by two inset bands of paving. The visual link is further extended by creating stepping stones to lead the eye down the garden and act as an informal path between house and office. The main terrace features built-in bench seating that has storage for outdoor cushions. The L shaped bench is also a raised planter, adding some much needed greenery to this part of the garden. This along with the outdoor kitchen are painted deep blue.

Two bespoke, powder coated steel planters subtly contrast with the blue paintwork. Slatted timber screening lines both sides of the garden, allowing light and wind to pass through. The gaps between the slats also allow the client to remain sociable with the neighbours. Herbs are introduced into the kitchen area by two steel troughs fixed to the wall. The planting features low maintenance palms, evergreen perennials and scented climbers. A designer light-up planter fits close against the wall allowing a generous space for the children to play in this family garden in Henleaze.
