Southville townhouse garden with colourful views
When our client first invited me to meet them and see the garden I was surprised to see it had been landscaped in the last few years by the previous owner. There was some great existing materials including natural stone paving and newly rendered walls. However, listening to the client it became apparent that it wasn’t meeting their needs. The space needed opening up and reconfiguring to provide them with a dining area. The view across Bristol was a big draw and advantage of this townhouse garden atop the hill. One of the desires was to create a more intimate spot from which to enjoy this view from.
It was refreshing to be able to retain some materials, alter structure and create pockets of planting. We retained the sandstone paving relaid it in places and introduced a band of clay pavers. This created a transition from dining area to cosier seating tucked behind the planting bed. We altered a raised bed to increase the amount of ground level planting that doesn’t hinder the view. An existing shed green roof was replanted with dwarf white lavenders, low ornamental grasses and blue flowering ground cover to evoke the sky above.
Yew balls create fabulous structure in winter as well as well as tall ornamental grasses that create a rhythm and repetition to the planting. Floaty perennials that put on a show in summer were introduced as well as dedicated pots for herbs. Climbing plants are encourage to clothe the slatted screen fencing including an existing Wisteria we managed to retain.
Our client included some fabulous furniture, the dining table, lounge seating as well as a bench are all stylish pieces in their own right.
