Plant lover’s garden – Bedminster

plant lover's garden with oak pergola

A plant lover’s garden with open spaces and secluded spots

Key in this plant lover’s garden was to incorporate as many of the existing plants as possible. All weather solutions were also important giving flexibility to enjoy the garden come rain or come shine. The side return and main terrace are both paved in riven slate. The main terrace is the perfect spot to capture the morning sun. A wooden potting shed with built-in log store provide storage for garden tools. Herb planters will give the clients easy access when required. A metal trellis is attached the the wall with another existing, scented rose trained up it.

Lawn and beds meet the main terrace allowing plants to soften the transition. An informal path of slate paving stepping stones runs through groundcover planting leading you to the rear seating area; an ideal spot for relaxing as this space enjoys the evening sun. The area is paved in slate and a bespoke pergola gives a feeling of privacy. A focal point and practical feature, the pergola is constructed from oak. A shade sail is easily attached and detached. Its waterproof fabric provides a safe haven in a summer down pour and also creates a shady spot when required.

A bespoke oak bench is positioned below the pergola. The bench is constructed from oak sleepers for durability and substantial appearance. This is to be painted to coordinate with the potting shed and log store. The garage wall is smarted up by with a fresh coat of off-white paint. Japanese maples contrast beautifully.

Planting features cottage garden favourites such as Penstemon, Salvia and Geranium. Honeysuckle and evergreen Star Jasmine climb up the pergola and trellis.

A simple garden lighting scheme extends the use of the garden. Festoon lights are draped over the pergola and spot lights nestle within the planting.
